Black Indians in History
**********************************
Thousands of Americans have Black and Indian ancestry. Many of the Freedmen of Indian Territory--now Oklahoma, who were the former slaves and free persons of color joined the Five Civilized Tribes. The Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Creek and Seminole Nations, genealogists will find records documenting the history of African people living within the Indian nations. Several census counts were taken between 1866 and 1907, specifically of the "persons of color" in Indian Territory.

The Black Siminoles
**********************************
Almost all of the slaves who sought the protection of the Seminoles in Florida also left with them for Oklahoma. Many of the descendants of the Black Siminoles are there today, organized as "Freedmen's Bands."

In his book "The Black Siminoles" Kenneth Porter examines the Black Seminole role in the bloody Second Seminole War, when John Horse and his men distinguished themselves as fierce warriors, and their forced removal to the Oklahoma Indian Territory in the 1840s, where John's leadership ability emerged.

Black Indians: An American Story

“Black Indians: An American Story,” explores the issue of racial identity among Black African Americans and Native American Indians. This in-depth documentary examines the coalescence of these two groups in American history. Discounted, and often ignored by mainstream America, these minority peoples have often shared a common past. However, with their heritage ignored and their contributions denied they are all but invisible at the dawn of the new millennium.

Statesman Frederick Douglass, poet Langston Hughes, singer Tina Turner, actor James Earl Jones and civil rights leader Jesse Jackson all have this blended Black Indian ancestry.

The hour-long documentary, which is narrated by the velvet voice of James Earl Jones, is garnering critical acclaim and playing to packed audiences at film festivals around the country. Several of the nation's top have shown the film, which won a Nammy recognizing the best in American Indian entertainment. VHS - Running Time 60 minutes Watch A Preview
