Native American Spirituality

A dictionary's definition of spirituality: "devotion to spiritual (i.e. metaphysical) things instead of worldly things." This definition does not apply to Native Americans because they do not recognize a dichotomy between "spiritual" and material things.

Native American spirituality and belief systems have seen a large resurgence of interest in the last 50 years. Perhaps this is due to the fact that Native American spirituality has a strong basis in both mysticism and practicality. For many people a study of Native American beliefs has served as a catalyst to reawaken their own personal spirituality. For others the Native American, shamanistic and other respect based belief systems has brought back to life their own contemporary religious beliefs, but in the light of a new understanding. The ceremonies of the sacred pipe and the sweat lodge have long been both healing and mystically enlightening.

All of the ceremonies involve thanksgiving. Thanking the Creator for his many gifts, thanking the animals for giving their lives so they may be food, thanks to the clouds for the water we drink.

The medicine men and priests among the Indians were usually merely those men who thought more deeply and strenuously than the average men in the tribe. These thinkers tended to live among the more successful tribes. To think, one needed at least some time free from the chore of procuring food. These medicine men or shaman were in a different class than the other men of their tribe. This special status was not dependent on their hunting and fishing. Contact with other tribes enabled thinkers to build and expand their belief frameworks, so shamen were more prevalent in tribes that were accessible to outsiders.

It has taken scientists until the last half of the 20th century to prove what Native Americans have known all along...we are all related. Not just human beings, but four-legged and winged brothers and sisters, as well as those who crawl. We, too, are related to, and part of our Mother, the Earth, and everything on her. When a Native American says she is our mother, it is not in some symbolic sense, but with the knowledge that we came from her and will return to her.

If you remember nothing else about Native American spirituality, remember that everything is sacred, and you will have learned much.

Fried Green Tomatoes

Submitted by: Mary
2 lb Green Tomatoes
4 Eggs
1 1/4 c Corn meal
3/4 c Water
1/4 c Chopped Onion
1/2 ts Salt
1/4 ts Pepper
1/4 c Butter

Slice the tomatoes 1/2 inch thick, but do not peel or core. Drain well between several thicknesses of paper towels. While the tomatoes are draining, make the batter by beating the eggs until light, then mixing in the corn meal, water, chopped onions, salt and pepper. Using a large, heavy iron skillet, heat the butter until it is bubbly. Dip the tomato slices in the batter, and brown quickly on both sides. Serve at once.

written by: Mike Walker:

What is a Warrior

A Warrior is the protector of
his family,clan and his tribe

A Warrior is the guardian of the
old ways so that they are not
forgotten

A Warrior is not motivated by
greed, political ambition or
fame

A Warrior will not put himself
above others in need

And above all
A Warrior is the living spirit of
our Grandfathers

Tsalagiyi Blessing

May the warm winds of Heaven
Blow softly upon your house.

May the Great Spirit
Bless all who enter there.

May your mocassins
Make happy tracks in many snows,

And may the rainbow
Always touch your shoulder.
